Roman Campaign Map Kit
A downloadable asset pack
Roman Campaign Map Kit is a hex system for strategy campaigns, built from geometry rather than texture. No parchment, no marble slabs, no gold filigree. Dark obsidian ground, warm ivory, aged gold, deep Roman red and a cold verdigris enemy.
Everything is vector. Every tile ships as SVG and as transparent PNG at three resolutions, so it drops into any engine with no shaders - and if you want a different size, a different palette or a fifth faction, the source is right there.
ONE SIZE KNOB
The art is authored at R = 84, the hex circumradius. Every inset, stroke, vertex tick, crenellation and road casing is a ratio of R, so the kit rescales without redrawing. A tile at R 46 has exactly the same proportions as one at R 150. The ratios are all in guides/geometry.json.
ONE CANVAS
Every tile-scale piece - ground, road, river, marker, state overlay - is drawn on the same 240 x 216 canvas with the same centre. Stack them at the same position and they composite exactly. There are no per-piece offsets to chase.
WHAT YOU GET
- 25 ground tiles: 4 materials (Roman, enemy, neutral, contested) x 6 terrains (plains, forest, hills, mountains, marsh, farmland), plus unscouted
- 6 transparent state overlays - hover, selected, available, threatened, completed, locked - that lay over any material, plus the same six pre-composited if you prefer
- Fortification for both sides, 4 hostile colourways (verdigris, steel, amethyst, ash) so you can field five readable sides, and pointy-top versions of every material
- 12 road pieces and 4 river pieces: via, road, damaged and water in straight, turn, junction and terminus. Every other case is a 60 degree rotation, and the rule is documented
- 15 markers and 12 icons on their own at 64 x 64 for legends and tooltips
- Supply lines in four states: solid, active, threatened, cut
- Region banners and victory / defeat result plates
- Two finished showcase boards
- guides/geometry.json and guides/pieces.json: lattice, pitches, direction table, edge midpoints, insets as ratios, rotation rules, colour tokens
- A dependency-free web renderer with a live demo, and a Godot 4 drop-in
THE FRONT LINE IS COMPUTED
The amber front is not a sprite. It is generated by walking every shared edge between friendly and hostile ground, which is why it stays continuous and correct when territory changes hands. Both reference renderers do it in about 60 lines; the code is included and commented.
TERRAIN THAT DOES NOT SHOUT
Terrain is an embossed motif on the tile face with no colour of its own. Ownership stays in the rim, the six vertex ticks and the inner border, so a Roman forest still reads Roman at a glance and a board can carry six terrains without becoming noise.
ENGINE SUPPORT
Web: roman-map-kit.js, no dependencies, no build step. Hover, selection, keyboard focus and a live scale slider. Open web/demo.html.
Godot 4: two scripts and a scene. Parsed and exercised headless in Godot 4.4.1; the lattice maths and all 17 road rotation cases match the web renderer exactly.
Anything else: the PNGs are plain transparent sprites and geometry.json has every number you need.
LICENCE
Use it in an unlimited number of commercial projects. Modify, recolour and re-export it freely. Do not resell or redistribute the files themselves. Full text in LICENSE.md.
Fonts are not bundled: the banner and result-plate SVGs reference Cinzel and Inter by name, both free from Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License.
